'n Bekkersdal-marathon / (eBoeke) . 2012 SUIDERKRUIS BOEKE
ISBN: 9781920608002
ISBN: 9781920608088

"Met my hotmuil, bedoel ek.

In Die Withaak Se Skadu .. SUIDERKRUIS BOEKE
- en ander oom Schalk Lourens-stories
ISBN: 9780620507646

Roy Campbell het aan Bosman geskryf: 'I think your stories ... are the best that ever came out of South Africa.'
Geluk, dis 'n kolskoot!'

Verborge Skatte: sestien kortverhale . 2001 HUMAN & ROUSSEAU

When author Herman Charles Bosman died some years ago, he left behind a vitally important legacy .... a legacy made up of the most delightful stories about the life and the people of our country, South Africa.
To those who have read such works as: Mafeking Road, Cold Stone Jug, Unto Dust, and a host of other stories, the name of Bosman will always be endearingly familiar. But strangers to the Bosman magic have a wonderful treat in store for them because for the first time, under the Heritage label, these stories will be brought to life by living voices, through the medium of recordings.
These recordings are being produced by the popular radio per sonality, Victor Mackeson. His interest in this great South African author led him to endeavour to bring back to life characters such as Oom Schalk Lourens, through the voice of Patrick Mynhardt. Patrick's depth of feeling in telling these stories possibly lies in the fact that both his Irish and Afrikaans descent blend together to portray these charming stories.
Oom Schalk lives once more . . . . . telling his stories in his own typical way . . . . . enthralling and delighting listeners right to the very last word, awaiting the sting in the tail which is the hallmark of every Bosman story.
Having heard this great old spinner of yarns, one is constantly amazed by Oom Scha|k"s understanding of the people in his stories, and the way in which he brings them to life . . . . . and one can almost smell the scent of the veldt in his wonderful descriptions.

NOTES by LIONEL ABRAHAMS
I knew Herman Charles Bosman during the last five years of his life. Upon me, and I believe upon many others (possibly even all) who knew him, he exercised an enchant ment (I use the word aware of all that it suggests relative to magic) of extraordinary power.
He was the gentlest and most genial of men, unsurpassably warm in human feeling.vetseun
He resembled Oscar Wilde, not only in the length of his lifespan, his conversational brilliance and social attractiveness, but also in humanity and kindliness. It was he who told me, with a touch of awe, how Wilde had taken off his coat in winter and wrapped it round a beggar. But he had the capacity for equal and greater generosities. lt was Bosman who, on visiting a man who had been committed to an asylum for the insane, declared that so far as he could see this man was saner than the doctors and keepers who had charge of him, and then took this man into his own home and found him a job of work at his own side and in all respects restored him to the fullness of life which he enjoyed for as long as Bosman lived. And the benign and tender spirit of that was to be felt in all of Bosman's human intercourse while I knew him - in fact in his dealings with all living things, human, animal and even vegetable. And with it all, making it into sweetness, went laughter: the hugest laughter and the hugest things to laugh at were always in process in Bosman's presence; So that we cannot think of him without think ing of laughter.
But laughter already has to do with the "Iiterary delight" of Bosman's company that I have mentioned...
To Bernard Sachs I owe this tale about Bosman at a performance of the Laurence
Olivier coloured film "Henry V." The scene was the field of Agincourt. The English
bowmen had formed their line and were holding the flight of their arrows until the moment when it would be most terrible. And down toward them came thundering the French cavalry - visors down, banners fluttering from the ready Iancers, all colour and rhythmical motion e in that glorious charge that grew minute after minute in excitement, grandeur and pathos. And suddenly Bosman rose, from his seat, threw his hat up into the bioscope air, and yelled at the top of his voice "Vive la Francel" The audience roared with laughter. .
And that is exactly what used to happen with Bosman all along. His fancy used to play right round things, giving them an extra dimension, for him giving them their reality. Anything his imagination could not get around did not exist for him. He accepted no abstractions at second hand. That is why sharing his conversation was always such a vital experience. Everything said was personal, spontaneous and brandnew. Most of the time the room would be thunderous with laughter - a laughter which was only the happier and freer because you felt you were in the presence of a cosmic
moment when the boundary of human experience was being rolled Hack in some special way, for you were laughing at poetry. The division between the sublime and the risible was gone.
When Bosman's literary career was broken off while it was still gathering momentum, South African literature, like a Baudelairian albatross, was suddenly deprived of soaring flight and reduced to a solemn, pedestrian, limping thing with a pipe in its mouth. To those who knew him personally there was another wayrin which his death also seemed to be the interruption of a strange and wonderful white-winged flight. - omslag
