1965 has drawn to a close and what a fantastic year it was for Virginia Lee. Never has any one South African artiste been so much in the news. Featured in most newspapers nearly every day - and at least two of her records played over various request programmes each day. January brought the Durban Song Festival, and Virginia was the proud producer of a very successful show - after this came the Slim Whitman Tour of South Africa, which, quoting nearly every newspaper, "petite, blond-haired Virginia Lee stole the show." Due to the fantastic success of a number she sang on the show, a single was recorded and it met with such amazing response, that an L.P. was recorded, with this song as the title number ... you´ll have guessep by now that, the song I´m referring to is: "CU CU RU CU CU PALOMA." According to reports from some of the top disc jockeys, this was one of the most requested numbers in South Africa. Shortly after this came a fabulous surprise ... Virginia was awarded the 1965 Natal Oscar for the Best Female Entertainer - on the night of the 31 st July. Roughly a month later, Virginia heard, to her mind, one of the most beautiful tunes ever, and between appearing in shows all over the country, she sat down and penned words to it. The result of this was one of the biggest hits South Africa has ever known ... 'Goodbye My Love,' the only vocal version, at that time, of this number in the world. (Since then this number, using Virginia´s lyrics has been recorded by big name overseas artistes, including Keely Smith in America). Over 100,000 copies of "Goodbye My Love" have been sold in the U.K. and it is at present making its way into the British Charts. Virginia´s record was the best-selling disc in at least one of every record bar in every town ... some as many as five weeks! We just managed to get ourselves used to her songwriting abilities, when she decided that an Afrikaans version should be made, the result of this being her best-selling L.P. "Vaarwel My Lief," which sold over 4,000 copies in ONE week. It was for this number that Ginny (as she is affectionately known), received one of the most sought after awards in the South African Recording Industry ... the 1965 SARI Award for the Best Afrikaans Vocalist - not forgetting the unadvertised fact that Virginia also came second in the Country & Western Category, and the Top Female Vocalist. Judging by the reaction of the public, Virginia was one of the few who, in their opinions, deserved the award. Only a day after receiving her award, Ginny appeared at a small town in the Transvaal where 4,000 people turned up to hear her!! Even though she was scheduled to appear for twenty to thirty minutes, it turned out to be over an hour!
To Virginia the accolade or her life was the winning of a GOLD DISC, signifying the sale of over 25,000 copies in South Africa of "GOODBYE MY LOVE." The first South African Female Artiste to win this coveted award.
All this success was, I personally believe, the crowning of years of hard work and sheer determination to put South African Artistes and music on the charts of the world. We can all truthfully say that no-one more in South African Show Business deserves this success than Virginia Lee ... a warm, sincere person - a person who at all times tries to please, to help and to be friendly. We congratulate Virginia Lee on a very, very successful year and we know that 1966 will bring her even more hits, more awards, but most of all, we hope it will bring her all the happiness in the world.
